Play ‘N Go recently launched two new video pokie games on the market, both dedicated to great explorers, with similar design and game play. Sails of Gold features the travels of Christopher Columbus taking you on his voyage to discover the new world. The game has a simple 10 pay line design and an interesting bonus round with extra wild symbols which are a nice addition to the overall concept.
What We love
Most video pokie games offer the best they have in the bonus round. This is the same with Sails of Gold which awards 10 free spins if you manage to trigger the bonus round.
The number of spins by itself is nothing special, but what makes them interesting are the scatter symbols that land during the free spins. The scatter symbols which only land on reels 1, 3 and 5 act as extra wild symbols, beside their standard scatter function, in the bonus round.
With every retrigger you get extra 10 free spins which are added to the already accumulated number of free spins. If you are lucky to land the scatters on a wining pay line along with some high paying symbol, a 5 of a kind win is almost guaranteed. So basically you can win extra free spins and a good coin prize in one single spin.
What we Do not Like
The thing we don’t like the most in this game is the fact that there is no multiplier attached to the free spins bonus round. Sure we understand that the extra wilds can produce decent winnings, but a free spins bonus without a multiplier seems just too weak to be able to payout anything big.
Also for a low variance game that Sails of Gold is promoted to be, the base play winnings are way too small and you drop in balance way too fast. Not something we would expect from a game like this.
Despite the lack of potential we saw, we still decided to try this game for real play and give it a chance. We played maybe 400 spins before we went bust and never once did we manage to hit anything decent over our initial balance. It was one quick ride to the bottom simply because there were too many empty spins and no medium or big wins to recover our lost balance.
The free spins came often and shed some hope on our bankroll, but each one of them ended with a small win. The biggest payout we got during the bonus was a small 40 x bet and this was with a re-trigger and a total of 20 free spins. We expected a lot more, but without a multiplier this game is definitely going in our list of non paying pokie games.
If Play ‘N Go copied this game from Novamatic the biggest wins should come after a big number of retriggers in the bonus round. Maybe you will be lucky to see this on your reels and we hope you win a lot more than us.
